Michael Roberts

1928 Cockshoot 6 light Saloon GTM35

Michael Roberts has named his GTM35 Enid, as it’s based on the first two letters of the number plate. Not stunningly imaginative, says Michael, but it has caught on.

Michael writes: “The first owner was a solicitor, George Clough, from Bury in Lancashire and it was first registered in December 1928 with its 6-light Cockshoot of Manchester body which is substantially unaltered. His family retained the car until 1949 when it went north to Carlisle and through several hands; it became a taxi in Rhyl at one point. However it was rescued in the 1970s and experienced various attempted restorations until I acquired it from a professional dealer in 1992 when it was in above average condition as I wanted a driveable vehicle.

Since then – next year will be 30 years in my ownership – it has been driven extensively in the UK and with several forays into Europe; it has been a wonderful and reliable car. Of course it has had all the necessary attention when needed, including a full engine rebuild in the late 1990s, the rear body frame in 2005 and in 2016 had an overdrive fitted. Enid has won Most Elegant in Class twice at the National Rally and a few other awards over the years. She averages in most years 1,000 miles. She is an absolute pleasure and always engaging – as there is always something to be attended to!”
