John Moore

1928 Windovers Limousine GYL22

Fifty years with ETTY

Fifty years with Etty, which is the name given to GYL22 Registration KX334.

The car was built for Lord & Lady Desborough of Taplow Court, Bucks and fitted with a town Limousine body by Windovers. It was kept by them and used during the war as restrictions allowed.

It was purchased for £450 in 1948 in London by Lt Col A.W.Hawkins who kept the car for 5 years. It was used as a daily run about, his daughter Mrs Diana Phillips learning to drive in it. Much of the history has been provided by Mrs Phillips who has kept many of her fathers papers. John naturally is very grateful to her for the history she has provided. He had the pleasure in July 2001 of giving her a ride in Etty and has kept in touch ever since.

In 1953 it was purchased by Mr Dod for the sum of £95. He apparently arrived on his bicycle to collect it. He put his bicycle in the back and drove home. He used Etty to go to work every day in Scunthorpe together with using it for touring or camping holidays and sometimes towing a folded caravan. One of those trips was to the South of France. John has spoken to his nephew who was a passenger on the various trips which were great fun.

In 1966 the car when in the hands of a dealer needed an overhaul, but he decided to do up the exterior first. When he got the mechanical quote in 1971 he sold it to John for £1750. John drove it home but the engine work couldn’t be put off any more.

John’s great friend Mel Grigg agreed to overhaul the engine which put the car back on the road but leaving one major job to be done each year. The interior was re-done by Colin Henderson, another great friend who was with John when he purchased it. It is now used for weddings and club events.

Etty is very special and has been both a challenge and great fun, being loved by all the owners who have never altered the original car.

The total mileage to date is 215000.
