Duncan Young

1928 H. J. Mulliner Weyman Saloon GBM37

Duncan & his wife Sue have been involved with Rolls Royces for many years through his brother Graham and indeed attended many dinners at the Hyde Park Hotel with him in the 1970's. Some years later Graham decided to emigrate to Australia taking his 20hp with him, Duncan naturally made many visits to see him over the years. As the years rolled by the 20hp began looking a little decrepit but during a visit in 2019 Duncan & Graham went to look over the car and later Graham asked if Duncan would like it back saying it would be up and running quickly. Without hesitation Duncan agreed and it rolled out of a container after a sea voyage in 2019 but the car then looked much worse than he thought however Duncan knew a local man Chris Nunn who restored other cars but he'd never before done anything with a 20hp.

The restoration or rather recommissioning, from chassis up took 3 years to complete with the emphasis being on recommissioning. Although the engine had been re-built in Australia it needed to be done again. An enormous amount of time was devoted to the bodywork and the interior to bring the car back to the standard you see today. The paint finish makes or brakes a car and in this case the colour has been changed from a faded blue to beautiful Brewster green to make a near perfect 20hp.

On page 35 of the 20Ghost Club News & Record Issue 78 Winter 2024 there is a fuller report by Johnnie Gallop who visited the Young's to see this car.
